New beginnings

29 Mar

So, today I have barely left the house {oh, okay, except for a sneaky early evening G&T with a friend}, and yet I have acquired the following:

- Two little framed flower pictures. Not fussed about the prints, but frames and mounts show promise

- A midnight blue hatbox

- A medium sized rattan storage box

- A wicker laundry basket {now reinvented as a shoe ‘dump’ for the hallway}

- Six sheets of metallic card in gold and silver

- A Harris 7” sheepskin roller set

- Two badminton rackets {and shuttlecocks}

- 24 party poppers

Now, I admit that some of these items have more use than others, but this reinforces my opinion that sometimes stuff finds you rather than you having to hunt for it. As it happens, we have been the grateful beneficiaries of a neighbour’s ruthless clear out due to a house move next week. She’s downsizing, and so reluctantly rehoming some of her collected possessions from many years, and a handful of different houses.

We chatted yesterday over afternoon tea in the garden about how people collect things to fit the house they live in at the time. You fill the space with features that somehow suit their destination – in terms of size and style and circumstances too. And also, on your way up the property ladder you invest in pieces that may – one day – find a place in your dream house. This is so true… Most of my discoveries belong in the sprawling, picturesque Georgian country pile of my {imagined} future. Not in a big crate in our leaky garage, which is where most of it currently resides.

One thing I can’t resist is glass. Decorative, cut glass, chunky, slender… if it has some kind of character it’s sure to catch my eye. Today I washed out and cleaned some really simple, ordinary old glass coffee canisters which will make perfect kitchen storage. I’ve already decanted rice, dried fruit, flour etc into them and feel a smug sense of ordered satisfaction about it. I picked them up for a few pence at a car boot sale, but they’ve instantly revamped my kitchen cupboards.

As the sink was full of soapy water I decided to make some of my other glassware sparkle too. Here’s just a small selection…

Storage solutions

23 Mar

I like to indulge my borderline obsessive tidying tendencies every now and again. When you live in a small house it’s a necessity. Most importantly I’ve set my mind to figuring out how I’m ever going to fit a life’s worth of ‘stuff’ into my compact {miniscule} home office area.

Forget Carrie Bradshaw’s walk-in closet  - there’s a dream for another day – it’s practical, workable storage that’s needed. Here are a few ideas that have caught my eye.

Buttons, tags, brushes, braids. I’m in heaven!

Love the ‘work in progress’ desk. Transforms something simple into something quite special. Would need about a million more shelves though!

Old suitcases and briefcases  are such a good idea for old photos and keepsakes. Nice touch with the personalised swing tags too

Spring cleaning

15 Mar

I hate to be a cliche, but the sunshine actually has given me the urge to spring clean today. As well as wielding my duster I’ve also finished up a couple of projects – and started on  some new ones.

This bird collage has been gathering dust at the top of the stairs for a while. I originally had it behind a larger mount and then a grander frame, but knew that something wasn’t quite right. Finally I’ve settled on something smaller, which suits it much better. This style of frame is fast becoming my favourite – it looks quite unremarkable when plain or gilded, but give it a coat of white paint and suddenly every nook, cranny and intricate moulded detail dances with light and shadow.

At the risk of becoming a resurrected branch of Athena, I have also set my mind to a different kind of revamp task. I’m in the process of turning this Queen Anne style dining chair into an elegant feature for a friend’s house. She’s opting for a chic palette of pure whites and shades of grey, so this will be upholstered in a simple grey ticking, and should look very smart {I’ll show you the results at a later date}.

I have four of these chairs stashed in the garage ready for a makeover. They really were in a sorry state when I picked them up, but I couldn’t resist the detail on the foot of this cabriole leg.

Originally I fancied doing something quite crazy with them – a bold colour or striking upholstery – to echo the elaborate design, but as you’ve probably guessed by now I think that pale and interesting is probably more my thing.

Baby love

13 Mar

In a moment of aimless internet browsing today I stumbled back across a favourite blog. It’s not new, in fact you’ve most probably seen it before, but Mila’s Daydreams {milasdaydreams.blogspot.com} is such a genuinely original concept, which manages to be cute without being toe-curlingly corny. It’s no wonder it became an overnight online sensation.

Inspired by the positions her two-week old baby Mila slept in while she napped, Adele Enerson decided to photograph them – and create a fantasy daydream around her.  The latest update to the blog sees readers sending in their own sleeping baby scenes {I adore Kirsi Vuomajoki’s baby ice skating – see below}.

I’m in awe of the creativity naturally, but also by the energy Adele must have. Most mums I know are either flat out with a cuppa, avoiding the housework, or scaling the heights of a lengthy list of chores as soon as the baby sleeps.

The blog is now a book – When my Baby Dreams by Adele Enerson {Harper Collins, Balzer + Bray}. Buy it from amazon here.

Sweet shop

7 Mar

Paid a visit to see friend and fellow revamper Emma Webb last week. Unique Chique is her sweet little shop in Church Crookham devoted to all things shabby and chic.

Emma has taken her talent for breathing new life into old furniture and now runs her own furniture painting courses using Annie Sloan techniques {click here for more info}. If you’re tempted to give ‘upcycling’ a go, a day of learning some basic skills in a friendly setting will give you the confidence to tackle your own projects at home.

Without Emma’s encouragement Create Vintage may never have been born. In fact, I got my first taste of furniture painting when Emma and I went along to an Annie Sloan masterclass some time ago. As well as the essential brush skills, we tackled crackle glazing, decoupage, stencilling and gilding. All taught in a fantastically no-nonsense fashion by Annie Sloan herself at her namesake Oxford shop.

Annie is a great believer that almost anything can be improved with a well-placed coat of paint, and her chalk-based paints enable even the most inexperienced painter to achieve a vintage look. She’s not fussy about an item’s background {even though you’ll find some extraordinarily beautiful pieces in her shop}, it’s simply about spotting the potential for transformation.

As well as a lovely collection of home accessories and gifts, you can find the full Annie Sloan paint range at Unique Chique {it’s where I get mine}. I do hope you’ll pop in.

Here comes the sun

1 Mar

It’s been a week of new arrivals… On Sunday we visited beautiful newborn William, and on Monday I went for tea and cuddles with the gorgeous {and exquisitely named} Matilda Plum. With a good dose of lovely new life to admire and today’s first breath of spring in the air I really have felt it’s time for some new creations.

So, today, with a month of full-time work behind me, and some free time ahead {hooray} I set to work on one particular idea which has been buzzing around my head for a while.

You are my sunshine vintage picture

‘You are my sunshine’ is a cheery little message for a little one’s wall {or a grown up’s wall for that matter too}. It’s still a work in progress, but I hope it makes you smile. As ever, it’s available as a commission… if I ever get it finished. All frames are entirely unique, and each picture is handmade to order.

There are plenty of other projects underway, one of which is the ‘beautifying’ of S and J’s house. I’ve been fiddling around with these two pictures, designed to sit side-by-side. Only thing is, J said he didn’t want anything too girly. Uh-oh, this pretty pair is practically bursting with oestregen!

Finally I’ve been revamping loads of frames, which I’ve acquired steadily over the past few months. Yesterday was a full-on paint fest in our house – me downstairs at the kitchen table, Mr CV upstairs painting the bedroom. The end result of my efforts was an unintentional Pollock-esque dustsheet. Might just have to frame that too!
